GOALS: Going on Against Life's Struggles

I hope this email finds you doing well! I am hoping that you can help us spread the word about the newly lunched non-profit organization in the Champaign-Urbana area for pregnant and parenting teens mothers and fathers between the ages of 13 - 19. Last week we had a great open house with teen parents, volunteers and mentors. As you can imagine taking on this task is not easy but, we understand the need to empower these teens and encourage them to set and attain GOALS for themselves and work towards completing those GOALS and to know that we are making major difference in not on the lives of the parents that we will come in contact during our monthly workshop but, their children will be positively impacted as well.

Our workshops are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at Jericho MB church in Champaign. Our next workshop is Monday, May 9th from 6 to 8 pm. Meals will be served and child care will be provided as we sit down with each mother and father and help them set realistic GOALS for them both personally and professionally as well as prenatally. Our May workshop title is "Strolling with GOALS" and our desire is to provide each participating more with a stroller. This stroller will not only meet a need but, it will symbolize that they can keep strolling along with the child to the next stop along the road to success!

We are asking the community to donate to GOALS and please know that no donation is too small. We are need of strollers for the next event, meal donations for our monthly workshops, monetary donations that go directly towards needs of the program needs. I have attached a copy of our wish list and we hope that you can support in our efforts. We also need more volunteers for mentors, child care workers and a volunteer application is attached as well.

Race, Space, and Rhetoric: Defining Community with
Discourse

In Michael’s talk, “Race, Space, and Rhetoric: Defining Community with
Discourse,” he considers the relationships among race, rhetoric, and the
built environment. The research takes up the predominantly black North
End neighborhood of Champaign-Urbana, with particular attention to the
history of the neighborhood’s park and community center. In addition to
offering a specific historical account of the activism and agency within
the black community, the speaker engages the role of discursive activity
in the making of real space. The talk locates black Americans’ struggles
for social, political, and economic equality by accounting for rhetorical,
discursive, and spatial considerations in the context of those struggles.
While legal and economic limits on mobility (for example, via Jim Crow
legislation and discriminatory housing practices) indelibly link racist
practices to spatial considerations (e.g. Weyeneth), space can also be
viewed as a necessary component in the process of making liberatory
claims (e.g. hooks). The study addresses how conceptions of space get
reinforced and/or reconsidered when subaltern communities speak and
write with space in mind. Michael’s attention to related texts and talk
underscores the ways in which discourse and rhetoric can facilitate the rearticulation
of legal and economic realities into more socially equitable
spaces.
