Description

This a Champaign IL community press conference about the shooting death of Kiwane Carrington. Kiwane Carrington was a fifteen old boy who was killed in October 2009 in an accident involving a Champaign police officer. The State Attorney ruled that the fatal shooting was an accident but Daniel Norbitz, the police officer involved in the shooting, was given a thirty day suspension. Following the accident, a lawsuit was filed with the Champaign Circuit Court, for Kenesha Williams, Carrington’s sister and administrator of his estate. In February 2011 the U.S. Department of Justice concluded its investigation into the accidental shooting of Kiwane Carrington, ruling that the evidence “did not establish a prosecutable violation of any federal criminal civil rights statute,” according to a press release. The Champaign City Council approved a $470,000 settlement between the family of Kiwane Carrington and the City of Champaign in September 2010, which Carrington’s family said they would not accept.
